My Own Journey into Healing
Nearly 50 years ago, during my undergraduate pre-med
studies, I found myself caught in the relentless pressure of
maintaining a 3.8 GPA to secure a place in medical school.
The stress was overwhelming—endless studying,
competitive coursework, and the constant fear of falling
short.
Over time, my body began to break down. I struggled to
regulate my body temperature, suffered from insomnia,
and battled anxiety so intense that it felt like needles were
piercing every pore of my skin. Desperate for answers, I
turned to the student health services, hoping for relief. The
diagnosis? Anxiety. The solution? A prescription for Valium
and sleeping pills.
The medications I was prescribed only made me feel
worse, and I knew deep down that masking symptoms
wasn’t true healing. I asked myself, Is this really the kind
of doctor I want to become—one who prescribes
medication without addressing the root cause? On a whim,
I followed a recommendation to visit a chiropractor and
nutritionist in the next town—Dr. David Kaufman.
That decision changed everything. Within weeks of
working with him, my symptoms dramatically improved. I
felt a level of balance and well-being that I hadn’t known
was possible. I knew then: This was the kind of healing I
wanted to practice. Six months later, I enrolled at New
York Chiropractic College, eventually earning my doctorate
with a specialty in kinesiology. Later, I pursued advanced
training in acupuncture, further expanding my
understanding of how the body heals.
Now, after nearly 45 years of practice, I can say with
certainty that my personal healing journey shaped the way
I care for my patients.
